Question: I just moved to New Hampshire and a neighbor told me insurance for a car is not required here. Is that true?
Answer: New Hampshire is unique in the United States in that it does not require insurance for a car to be driven on its roads. The only other state that allows a driver to operate a motor vehicle without insurance is Virginia and they require a $500 dollar fee be paid to the state by all drivers who choose not to carry auto insurance.
With that being said simply because it is not required does not mean it is not recommended. In many cases New Hampshire residents choose not to carry auto insurance to save money. In the event of an accident, however, the uninsured motorist is liable for any damages they may cause.
One non-covered accident will do more than negate the savings a driver can accumulate by not carrying even minimal insurance. If a non-insured driver is found to be liable in an accident then their wages can be attached and their assets can be sought in a lawsuit.
We highly recommend that you ignore the fact that the required insurance for a car in New Hampshire is non-existent. Purchase a minimum policy and drive with greater piece of mind.
